Bus load of Malema supporters at court

2011-04-14 10:42

A bus load of supporters of ANC Youth League president Julius Malema sang and chanted his name today outside the Joburg High Court, where Malema faces a hate speech charge.

“My president, my president, leave my president alone,” shouted one of them.

The bus they arrived in was decked in ANC colours with a picture of President Jacob Zuma on its side.

Malema wore a grey suit with a purple shirt for the case at the high court, sitting as the Equality Court.

Yesterday, Malema assured about a 1 000 supporters outside the court that he was going to win the case.

“We are going to win, because we are children of winners,” he said.

At the time, Malema was surrounded by bodyguards and had ANC stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela at his side.

“We are doing well, our lawyers are doing very well... you are real friends, real comrades,” he said. Thanking Madikizela-Mandela, he referred to her as his “mother”.

Civil rights group AfriForum has contested Malema’s singing of a struggle song containing the lyrics “shoot the boer” or “awudubhule ibhunu”, and has argued that it constitutes hate speech.
