Buyers ahoy!

In the naval town of Simonstown, towards Cape Point from Cape Town, there is a wealth of window shopping to be done on St Georges Street, and on Main Road you’ll find all the seafaring decor bits you might need.

Packed with naval memorabilia, as befits a shop called HMS Pickpocket, and plenty of other knick-knacks, porcelain, brass ships’ bells and plaques and some really gorgeous ones (a dying art) made out of wood and ceramic, this will keep old sea dogs enthralled for some time.

If you are able to leave here without buying anything, you are indeed strong. From the magnificent brass coal scuttles hanging outside to the shiny brass saxophone, still in its case with all its bells and whistles, to the fabulous collection of Royal Doulton “ladies”, this is an Aladdin’s cave of treasures for collectors.

If you are a bibliophile you will be entranced by this formidable collection. Take a book and sit down surrounded by a collection of antique frocks, shiny horse brasses on the fireplace wall, and the tranquillity that only a library can bring, and unwind in a timeless setting.

Pat Barrett is known far and wide by local and foreign visitors who value her unerring eye for something really superb, in crystal, porcelain, or silver to grace the most beautiful homes here and abroad.

Take tea with her in her tiny garden enclave in back and take a load off those bargain-hunting feet.

World famous wildlife artist Paul Dixon has some of the most superb oil paintings of our continent, and especially of our magnificent animals, caught in a semi-spiritual world, very evocative.

You can usually watch him at work here, creating yet another inimitable painting. He also has the work of other artists, and will arrange shipping anywhere.

Recently opened, this is probably one of the most carefully selected collections of vintage clothing and naval uniforms anywhere.

Some of them are gorgeous, and some are just fun, from frocks, to handbags, gloves, costume jewellery, and plenty of those feathered cloche hats your grandmother, and the late Queen Mother, made famous.

The closest thing to a genuine French cake shop this side of the mountain. Irresistible fruit tarts, granadilla crème brûlée hearts, sticky chocolate custard pastries, light as air éclairs, cheese cake covered in a layer of whipped cream?–?throw caution to the wind and indulge.
