CAR: No time for cheap political points – ANC

2013-03-28 09:20

The ANC has defended the deployment of South African troops to the Central African Republic (CAR), adding that the “political posturing” around the issue was regrettable.

Chief Whip Mathole Motshekga said the ANC’s founding values supported the struggle for a humane, just, equitable, democratic, and free world.

This was what informed the party’s international relations policy.

“In particular, the development and prosperity of Africa remains the central objective of the government’s international perspective and policy for purposes of advancing the African Renaissance,” he said.

This was why the ANC, as the majority party in Parliament, supported the deployment of SA National Defence Force (SANDF) members to the CAR when President Jacob Zuma consulted Parliament about the move.

Thirteen SANDF troops were killed, and 27 were injured, in the CAR at the weekend.

Motshekga said his office “noted with regret the political posturing” in the wake of the deaths.

“We believe that this is no time to score cheap political points.”

He said the SANDF had been in CAR since 2007, after a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the countries, for training and capacity-building.

“These brave heroes fought for the noble and selfless cause for peace, democracy and development in Africa,” Motshekga said.

He conveyed the ANC’s condolences to the families of those killed in the line of duty.

Motshekga condemned the conduct of the CAR rebels blamed for the attack on the South African soldiers.
