CD Review – Jason Moran: Ten (Blue Note/EMI)

2010-10-01 13:42

This album marks pianist Jason Moran’s first decade as a leader of The Bandwagon.

However, this 12-track offering adds drummer Nasheet Waits and Tarus Mateen on bass to Moran’s keys, completing what has been dubbed the most exciting rhythm section in jazz today.

The album contains many of Moran’s idiosyncrasies – like “static” and “found“ sounds on Feedback Pt. 2 and Old Babies – though the central priority is clearly the playing.

On RFK in The Land of Apartheid, Mateen’s brooding lines create a platform for piano improvisations.

Moran doesn’t patronise his heroes either, as heard in Crepuscule with Nelly– a Thelonious Monk classic delivered with refreshing, youthful latitude.

7/10 – Percy Mabandu
