CD Review – Simphiwe Dana: Kulture Noir (Gallo)

2010-10-01 13:50

Simphiwe Dana sounds much more matured and sure of her ideas in her latest project.

But be warned, this is not jive music. Dana presides over a languid and dark third album, aptly titled Kulture Noir.

Choosing to start with Indim Iqawe Part 1 followed by Part 2 as an a capella treat might be an act of self-affirmation and acceptance, apart from a display of her vocal gifts.

Dana here summons all her influences, which are revealed like onion peels with each listen, as heard in Hayi Ihambo with its finger-snapping Sophiatown feel, thereby submitting to her unhurried style.

Fela Azania, presumably an ode to Fela Kuti, enlists trumpeter Felix Arimoro and Sphamandla Bembe on saxophone to reanimate the late Afrobeat king’s searing horn lines.

7/10 – Percy Mabandu
