Freedom fighters and those who paid the highest price for democracy are “turning in their graves” following the unparliamentary behaviour of members of Parliament last week.

So said Jeff Radebe, Minister in the Presidency for Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, this morning, during an information session at Parliament following the conclusion of one of Cabinet’s fortnightly meetings.

Members of the Economic Freedom Fighters party were forcibly removed from Parliament by members of the police during President Jacob Zuma’s state of the nation address after they insisted that he answer questions over the R246-million renovations done at his private residence in Nkandla.

Radebe said the Cabinet condemned the “disorderly and unparliamentary” behaviour of certain MPs, and viewed it as “disappointing”.

“It is disappointing that elected public representatives chose to dishonour the sacrifices and struggle for democracy – which was difficult to achieve.”

Radebe was asked how the sacrifices and struggle were dishonoured. He answered: “It is expected that when people are elected as public representatives they will follow the mandate of the people who elected them.

“So when people purposefully disrupt Parliament through their behaviour it is very unparliamentary, so all the people who gave their lives for freedom – even those who paid the highest price – I’m sure they are turning in their graves.”
