Cameroon troops kill 33 Boko Haram fighters

Cameroonian troops have killed at least 33 fighters from radical Nigerian group Boko Haram.

The insurgents attacked a military base in Kolofata in the north, army spokesperson Didier Badjeck told dpa today.

“The fighting was intense, but our military succeeded in putting the terrorists to rout,” he said.

Badjeck added that 33 bodies of Boko Haram members were found, while one Cameroonian soldier was killed in the fighting.

Cameroon has deployed more than 1000 troops in its Far North region, where Boko Haram members frequently enter from Nigeria to stage attacks.

Boko Haram, which wants to create an Islamist state in Nigeria, killed thousands of people in the country’s north last year.
