Can Agang stand the test of time? : Not so fast...

2013-02-24 10:00

A stronger opposition is needed on South Africa’s political stage. I am talking here of an opposition that will have a clear vision for itself and the entire nation.

The problem with the current regime is that the many faults that were identified 10 years ago are still the same problems communities are facing today.

With the recent service delivery protests and the Marikana situation, it clearly shows that inequality is still very much prevalent in South Africa.

The sad part of it is that most ANC cadres are using their political connections to enrich themselves and, in the process, forgetting their true mandate.

They do not have the time for service delivery, but are forever thinking about accumulating more wealth.

Most of the cadres, in fact, don’t even know what the ANC’s stand is on education, economic development, foreign policy and related matters.

They can hardly answer or give a well-informed answer on the above. All they say is “education must be free”.

I am, therefore, of the opinion that if struggle heroes like Dr Mamphela Ramphele step up and become transparent about their political ambitions, they will succeed in keeping the ANC on its toes.

But they also need vision and a clear plan.

I am convinced that with more of Ramphele’s type availing themselves, the South African electorate – those for and against the current ANC regime – will eventually see the difference and vote for a great leader who can think and reason.
