Canadian firm to open new mine in Zambia

2011-01-22 12:01

Lusaka – Canada’s First Quantum Minerals planned to start developing a new copper mine in northwestern Zambia in the second quarter of the year, the state-owned Zanis news agency reported today.

The province’s secretary, Daniel Bowasi, said the new Kalumbila mine, would gradually compare in size to Kansanshi, the country’s largest mine by output.

Details would be announced by First Quantum on Tuesday.

“This is a big project that will turn northwestern province into Zambia’s new Copper Belt and contribute a lot of resources to the treasury through taxes,” Bowasi said.

First Quantum also operates Kansanshi mine, which contributed 230 800 tons of copper to the 2010 total production of 740 000 tons for Africa’s top producer of the metal.
