Cape Town readies for Fifa Final Draw party

2009-12-04 11:04

JETS and helicopters flying overhead, streets in the city centre

closed, flags fluttering on every lamppost and a surfeit of security in sight

are some of the things contributing to a palpable air of excitement ahead of the

Fifa 2010 World Cup Final Draw today.

The draw determining the matches to be played by the 32 countries

participating in the tournament takes place at the Cape Town International

Convention Centre at 7pm in front of 3 000 international VIP guests, including

President Jacob Zuma, Fifa president Sepp Blatter, soccer star David Beckham and

our own Hollywood actress, Charlize Theron.

It will also be broadcast live to an estimated 150 million viewers

in 200 countries.

A four-storey stage has been set up at the top end of Cape Town’s

party avenue, Long Street, from which the draw will also be broadcast, setting

the scene for a party expected to attract more than 15 000 revellers.

Besides the plethora of bars and restaurants offering their own

entertainment for the night, partygoers will also be entertained by a

star-studded line-up of performers including perennial crowd pleasers Freshly

Ground, Jimmy Dludlu, Cassette, TKZee, K’Naan, Flat Stanley, Coda and Fancy

Galada. There will also be buskers, carnival characters and stilt walkers.

Inner city back packers and hotels contacted say they are fully

booked for the weekend and most of them are also fully booked for the duration

of the World Cup next year.
