Cape Town receives Designer City Award

2011-10-26 12:37

Cape Town was announced as the winner of the Designer City Award for 2014 today, Arts and Culture Minister Paul Mashatile said.

“We are honoured that Cape Town is the first city in Africa to achieve this award,” Mashatile said in a statement.

Cape Town would be the fourth city to receive the award from the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design.

The award was in recognition of the city’s “accomplishments in using design as a catalyst for development and reinvention, as well as for improving its social, cultural and economic environments”.

Mashatile said the city demonstrated it had the expertise, infrastructure and financial capabilities to successfully develop and implement a year-long programme of international design-related events.

It also illustrated how its citizens would continue to benefit from Cape Town’s achievements in design.

There were 56 cities in the world that competed for the award.

Dublin in Ireland and Bilbao in Spain were the other two finalists for the 2014 award.

The 2012 Designer City of the Year was awarded to Helsinki in Finland.

As the recipient, Cape Town would host a number of prestigious design-related events and conferences organised by the World Design Capital and the local committee.

“This is indeed an achievement for all of us as South Africans and especially for the culturally vibrant and resilient people of this beautiful and cosmopolitan South African city that is nestled between a mountain and the sea,” Mashatile said.
