SA 800m champion Caster Semenya endured a difficult start to her first international competition of the season after she placed a distant 10th in her specialist event at the Diamond League meeting in Rome, Italy.

Semenya, who is racing against time to make a qualifying time for the Commonwealth Games later this year, clocked 2:02.66 for 10th place in a field of 12 athletes that finished the Golden Gala race last night.

The 2012 Olympics silver medallist nonetheless improved the 2:03.05 time that won her the SA title in April. She started her season with a 2:02 during the provincial championships, also in March.

In the other events, the going was equally tough for sprinter Simon Magakwe, 2013 World Championships bronze medallist Johan Cronje and discus thrower Victor Hogan.
