Former world 800m champion Caster Semenya is the big name missing from the multicoded Team SA for the Commonwealth Games that starts in Scotland next month.

Semenya failed to meet the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) criterion that athletes must be ranked in the top five among the Commonwealth nations.

Some of the elite athletes who made the initial 155-member team after today’s announcement were Olympic champion Chad le Clos, SA 100m record holder Simon Magakwe and Springboks legend Bryan Habana, who will turn out in the rugby sevens.

The number of the team will grow to 187 as the naming of the men’s and women’s hockey teams has been delayed due to the ongoing World Cup in the Netherlands.

Sascoc president Gideon Sam said the Olympic governing body was projecting a haul of 43 medals and about R1.2 million has been set aside to reward the medallists.

“We brought back 33 medals from the India Commonwealth Games in 2010, but we project 43 medals this time,” said Sam.

He said that more than R900 000 would go to the athletes who made it to the podium in Glasgow, with the remainder of the cash incentives going to the coaches.

Gold medallists are guaranteed R40 000 and R20 000 for a silver medal while bronze medallists will get R7 500.

Coaches will get R10 000 for guiding their charges to a gold, R5 000 for silver and R2 500 for bronze.

In Glasgow, Team SA will contest 16 codes: aquatics (including para-swimming), athletics (including para-athletics), badminton, boxing, cycling, gymnastics, hockey, judo, lawn bowls, netball, para-weightlifting, rugby sevens, shooting, triathlon, weightlifting and wrestling.
