Caster in confident mood

2012-07-27 14:03

London – South African 800m star Caster Semenya was a welcome visitor at a press conference ahead of her role as flag bearer at the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics this evening.

Semenya spoke of the fact she “wasn’t expecting” the honour of carrying the SA flag, but was excited at the opportunity.

Team SA Chef de Mission Patience Shikwambana added that “there was no one better to carry the SA flag at the ceremony”.

When questioned on her own chances of winning a medal in the 800m starting on August 8, Semenya was in a bullish mood, saying: “I’m hoping to contribute to SA’s goal of winning 12 medals – perhaps we’ll even double that tally!”

Despite a rough season to date, Semenya isn’t concerned about the times she’s recorded thus far, adding that running a good time is of secondary importance to winning a medal.

Despite appearing at her first Olympics, Semenya has the vastly experienced Maria Mutola as her coach, and has drawn inspiration from the former Mozambique 800m runner’s knowledge of competing at the very highest level.

Semenya joins a list of SA Opening Ceremony flag bearers that include her current manager, Hezekiel Sepeng, who had the honour in Sydney in 2000.

According to local bookmakers Ladbrokes, Semenya is the fourth favourite in the 800m, and can be backed at 6/1.
