Caster to open season in Bellville

2012-03-02 14:29

Former world 800m champion Caster Semenya gets her season underway in the second and final Yellow Pages Inter-provincial meeting in Bellville, Cape Town, tomorrow.

Semenya lines up in a 19-strong field, headlined by Tjipekapora Herunga of Namibia, in the women’s 400m event.

Herunga holds a personal best of 51.84 seconds, set in Maputo last year, and Semenya will need to be near her best – she clocked 52.54 in Germiston last season – if she expects to seriously challenge the Namibian.

Elroy Gelant, meanwhile, will go in search of the Olympic qualifying time in the men’s 5 000m race.

Gelant will have the versatile Stephen Mokoka for company as he hunts the A-standard time of 13 minutes, 20 seconds (13:20), which falls less than six seconds short of Shadrack Hoff’s 17-year-old national record.

Former African shotput champion Burger Lambrechts will look for another solid performance after heaving a distance of 20.12m in Germiston last week – his best effort in six years.

Elizna Naude, the 2006 Commonwealth Games gold medallist, leads the field in the women’s discus throw.

Hosts Western Province will be gunning for top spot in the inter-provincial series.

Gauteng North are top of the standings of the 10 provinces taking part, holding 24 564 points after the season opener in Germiston.

Western Province, in second place, will hope to close a deficit of nearly 1 200 points.
