Cato Manor cops granted bail

2012-08-23 08:52

The 12 members of the Durban organised crime unit arrested in connection with alleged hit squad activity have been granted bail in the Durban Regional Court.

The officers, led by KZN Hawks boss Major-General Johan Booysen, will join 18 of their colleagues again in court tomorrow.

The earlier group had been arrested for 14 counts of murder and a variety of other offences during June following a six-month investigation into claims that members of the Cato Manor serious and violent crimes unit had been responsible for murdering suspects and covering up the unlawful killings.

Today’s group were arrested by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) as part of a second and third phase of the investigation.

Tomorrow the full group of 30 will be served with an indictment and a date will be set for the trial in the Durban High Court.
