Cele backs Cato Manor cops

2012-06-21 07:59

Sacked national police commissioner Bheki Cele has arrived at Durban’s Y Regional Court to support members of the Cato Manor Organised Crime Unit.

The unit’s 20 members are today due to apply for bail after being arrested in a massive Hawks operation yesterday.

Scores of supporters and relatives packed the court ahead of the men’s appearance.

The men were arrested following an investigation into an alleged police hitsquad operating out of the unit, which has since been disbanded and whose members have either been suspended or moved to other units.

A high-powered team of lawyers representing the 20 is in negotiations with the state over the application, which will begin mid-morning.

The 20 are set to be charged with, among other offences, murder, assault, assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm and firearms offences.

It is not clear at this time whether the State will oppose bail.
