Cele board inquiry member robbed

A member of the Board of Inquiry into the conduct of national police commissioner General Bheki Cele has been robbed.

Three men armed with R5 assault rifles robbed the member and his family last Friday, according to board spokesperson Bongiwe Gambu.

The rifles were of the same type as those recently reported stolen from a safe at Air Force Base Waterkloof in Pretoria.

Gambu said the stolen rifles belonged to the VIP Protection Unit tasked with protecting President Jacob Zuma.

The men also stole laptops, the house and car keys before fleeing. “There are many questions that remain unanswered because the armed men knew exactly what they were looking for. They chose only laptops and keys.”

Gambu said the board member did not sleep at the house that evening for security reasons, but did activate the security system.

On Saturday, it was found that someone had attempted to break into the house but was unsuccessful, said Gambu, adding that police were investigating.
