Cassper Nyovest stole the show with four awards and walked away with the best song of the year

The 14th annual Metro FM Music Awards opened with an incredible montage of the past 14 song-of-the-year winners, and was the best produced since its inception.

The first act included a live performance by Mapaputsi doing Dali Wami, Ntando doing his version of Dali Wami and Rhythmic Elements doing 2 by 2.

Hosts Minnie Dlamini and Metro FM’s T-Bo Touch were capable hosts who spent just the right amount of time on stage.

This year’s Metros had a big focus on the great songs and artists of the past, and this was part of the show’s magic this year. The healthy dose of nostalgia had the crowd on their feet for most of the show.

One of the cutest moments of the awards was when father-and-son duo Marks and Maps Maponyane took to the stage to presenters the best collaboration award.

The dress code was black-carpet glam, and many celebrities opted for a more simple look. Durbanites came out in their numbers to see their favourite celebrities walk the black carpet.

Pearl Modiadie arrived in a maroon leather ensemble that looked incomplete, but she rocked the hell out of it. Zizo Beda arrived in a black dress with feather detailing that showed off her great figure.

Boity Thulo sparkled in a champagne-coloured full-length gown embellished with diamanté stones.

Dr Malinga arrived in his trademark shorts and suit jacket and opted for a hideous bright green and yellow colour this time.

Mrs Bheki Cele looked gorgeous in a white knee-length dress, which her husband Bheki “The General” Cele matched with a simple grey suit.

Metro FM Dj Lulo Cafe was one of the best dressed men there – he wore a black three-piece suit with subtle gold detailing.

Bonang Matheba wore a gorgeous floor-length cerise gown

Bonang “Queen B” Matheba once again proved her fashion versatility with a gorgeous floor-length cerise gown. Actress Pam Andrews went for a disastrous Beyoncè-esque stage costume worn under a big white skirt. Pearl Thusi was among the best dressed in a cream-white gown with a dramatic trail. Stoan Seate looked dapper in a black suit with subtle polka-dot detail.

Crowd favourite Sfiso Ncwane gave a spirited performance after he accepted the best urban gospel award.

The late Eddie Zondi, who presented the hugely popular Romantic Repertoire on Sunday afternoons on Metro, was honoured in a touching tribute featuring a montage of the most popular and songs from his show.

The legendary Mahotella Queens performed with the equally legendary Tshepo Tshola, before both were presented with the two lifetime achievement awards of the night.

The biggest winner of the night (with four awards, including song of the year) was rapper Cassper Nyovest. He cemented his place in the local music scene with his wins.

Nyovest closed off the show with an electrifying performance of his biggest hits – Phuma Kim, Doc Shebeleza and Gusheshe.

Durban listeners made sure that their local artists were represented among the winners with the likes of DJ Fisherman, Lvovo Derrango and Duncan, who all took home some silverware.
