Some of the nation’s most popular faces took to the red carpet last Sunday for the SA Film and TV Awards. Gugulethu Mhlungu gives her style verdict.

Eucharist Mabena and Bob Mabena. Pictures: Lucky Nxumalo

1. Eucharist and Bob Mabena went for a fuss-free look. Mrs Mabena’s skirt is yummy and balances out the dramatic top, which is overwhelming at first glance but actually works as part of the outfit. Uncle Bob’s dark-blue suit was also just right.

KCI / Mthobeli Casey August in black and white

2. KCI/Casey Mthobeli August

If this were worn by anyone else, it would have been a disaster, but because it’s KCI from Umhlobo Wenene FM, it’s just right. Part of the reason it works is the monochrome palette. The other is because he balanced it with detailing and embellishments at the bottom and kept it plain on top.

Khanyi Mbau

3. Khanyi Mbau’s dress is quite pretty. The delicate cerise detailing on the white background is delightful. But it goes awry from the empire line. The skirt and train look as though they were intended for another dress and they let the lovely bustier down.

Bonang Matheba

4. Bonang Matheba has managed to get dressing for the red carpet down to a fine art. Her black Taibo Bacar pantsuit is formal and glam. The bustier is beautiful; the faux bob and touch of red lips are just right. One of the simplest and best looks of the night.

Marjorie Langa

5. Marjorie Langa’s choice of colours had all the potential to be great - the skirt is lovely and the top is great. But the finishing lets down a great look.

Zenande Mfenyana

6. Zenande Mfenyana’s pop of yellow was lovely. The embellishments plus the colour make for a bold look that borders on OTT. Maybe the embellishments could have been less contrasting, but it managed to come together beautifully and it worked for her.
