Cellphone found in Mbatha’s cell

Police in Boksburg prison are asking themselves how William Mbatha

got a cellphone and two sim cards into the prison after these items were found a

few weeks ago in his cell.

This has also baffled members of the crime intelligence unit who

are now investigating the matter. This emerged at Germiston Magistrate’s Court

during his bail application yesterday.

Mbatha faces charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances, car

theft and attempted robbery. He also faces more than nine other charges

including housebreaking, theft and tax evasion.

The state now considers Mbatha a flight risk because it was

discovered that he communicated with his friends while in prison through the


The state also opposed his bail on grounds that Mbatha had violated

his previous bail conditions by going to the UK in January and June without the

permission of the investigating officer.

The state furthermore branded him a liar who lied about

surrendering his passport to a certain police captain.

Mbatha’s counsel Jack Gerber accused the state of misleading the

court. He produced pictures and hotel receipts to prove that his client was in

Rosebank and Durban on two dates the state alleged that he committed separate


The defence team asked for more time to reply to new allegations

the state presented to the court.

The case was postponed to Thursday.
