Centenary stadium packed to capacity

2012-01-08 13:10

Hundreds of revellers were still flocking to the Free State stadium in Bloemfontein this afternoon despite the entrance being closed since noon.

Security is tight and people who cannot enter are trying to avoid the blazing sun by sitting in the shade on pavements and under trees around the stadium.

Visitors without a place to sleep parked their cars and buses around the stadium last night and partied at pubs and in the streets of Willows, the residential area next to the stadium, until the wee hours of the morning. Several were found sleeping under trees, in their cars and under buses early this morning.

ANC spokesperson William Bulwane said the stadium would be closed when it reached capacity and that the Loch Logan Waterfront and Rose Garden would be used as spill-over venues.

President Jacob Zuma is expected to deliver the January 8 statement shortly after 4pm.

A display of fireworks will mark the end of the weekend tonight.
