Chamber of Mines welcomes Zuma’s new HIV strategy

2011-12-02 11:13

The National Strategic Plan on HIV/Aids and TB is important as it recognises the strong link between the two diseases, the Chamber of Mines said today.

“We are grateful for the leadership demonstrated by President Jacob Zuma, Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe and Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi,” CEO Bheki Sibiya said.

“The National Strategic Plan is significant as it integrates the approach and management of HIV/Aids and TB into the strategic plan.

“In addition, the approach recognises the need for more efficient utilisation of resources.”

Sibiya said stakeholders in the mining industry had held a summit on HIV/Aids and TB last month.

It was part of their ongoing efforts to improve health and safety in the mines.

The commitments made at the gathering included ensuring that strategic and operational plans on addressing HIV/Aids and TB were part of the application requirements for mining licences.

It was also decided that hostels for mine workers should be upgraded in line with the mining charter.
