Chaos during youth league meeting in Durban

2011-10-04 11:02

Chaos erupted when ANC Youth League members in KwaZulu-Natal stormed into a league meeting in Durban.

The Sowetan newspaper reported today that members were disgruntled that only the chairperson and secretaries of the league in the eThekwini region were allowed into the closed meeting yesterday afternoon.

They sang songs in support of President Jacob Zuma and chanted slogans branding the youth league leader Julius Malema a gangster and isibhanxa, a Xhosa word for a fool.

Heavily armed security guards used teargas to disperse the protesters, according to the newspaper.

The gathering was part of a series of the league’s regional meetings taking place in KwaZulu-Natal, held by the league’s leaders to explain why they disbanded the provincial structure.

The disbanded structure was accused of encouraging members to defy decisions made by the league’s national body.

However, the provincial executive said it was disbanded because it backed Zuma to serve a second term and because it refused to mobilise league members to support Malema when he appeared before an ANC disciplinary committee.

Youth league spokesperson Floyd Shivambu yesterday said regional meetings had been successfully held in the province’s Lower South Coast, Preva Khumalo, Harry Gwala, Ukhahlamba and Emalahleni regions.
