Chaotic start to Malema appearance

2012-09-26 08:03

Julius Malema’s first appearance in court got off to a chaotic start when journalists without permission slips to film and take pictures in court were thrown out or prevented entry.

“Riot police have been deployed to deal with those trying to get inside the #Malema courtroom. Most of them journalist,” tweeted CNN’s Nkepile Mabuse.

eNCA journalist Karyn Maughan passed out amid a scuffle between police and journalists at the Polokwane Magistrates’ Court where the former ANC Youth League president is appearing for allegedly laundering R4.6 million through his Ratanang Family Trust.

According to tweets, Maughan’s collapse was in part the result of police manhandling members of the media. Another tweet said she had fainted because she was diabetic.

Tweeted Phillip de Wet: “Bloody hell. All the violence is inside the court today.”

Maughan later tweeted: “Back in court after being pushed out by police and passing out. All good except for a sore head. :)”

City Press’s Charl du Plessis tweeted that he could get back into the courtroom after obtaining permission slips for filming and photography.
