Kaizer Chiefs scored an important win over Orlando Pirates to preserve their grip atop the Absa Premiership standings with a Willard Katsande goal.

Pirates coach Vladimir Vemezovic said: “We didn’t do so badly in the first half. We knew they were dangerous on set pieces and they dominated in aerial balls. After the goal (a header from Katsande in the 60th minute) we gave Knowledge Musona too much space and our defence is not so fast. We created a lot of chances and unfortunately we didn’t score. Thabo Matlaba was out (of the starting line-up) because we wanted tall guys for the set pieces. We’ll prepare ourselves for next season.”

Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter said: “It is great when you win the derby.

Pirates played a lot of possession in the first half.

I am pleased that we were tactically disciplined in the second half.

Our transition was too slow and I talked that through with the guys at half time.

People saw the tactical side of Katsande today because I told him he was too reckless and he had to calm down.

I like his physicality and I told him it must be under control. (Goalkeeper) Reyaad Pieterse showed today that he has strong character.

He kicked himself for conceding the second goal against Platinum Stars midweek and he didn’t concede today.

“It augurs better that we will have our next four games at home considering that we have to travel to Congo for the game against AS Vita in the CAF Champions League. It is going to be tough because we also have a Nedbank Cup game to play (against amateur side FC Buffalo). We’ll treat it one game at a time and I am very pleased we won today.”
