Child identifies ‘rapist’ in court

2012-07-31 12:51

A seven-year-old boy has positively identified in court today the young man who had allegedly raped him two years ago.

The boy has been giving testimony in the Scottsburgh Regional Court through an intermediary since Friday.

Today, he was instructed by the magistrate to walk into the court to see if he could identify his alleged rapist.

He stood on top of a chair while his grandmother held his other hand and pointed to the accused, Lindile Nkotheba (19).

The boy, who was five at the time of the alleged incident, claims Nkotheba had led him into a one-room shack at the neighbour’s house where Nkotheba was visiting and raped him.

The child was required to give a detailed account of the alleged rape as he was cross-examined by the defence, much to the displeasure of people in the public gallery.

Asked by the magistrate if he would be able to identify his offender if he met him on the street, the child said he would. “I would point him out but then I would run away.”

The child’s grandmother also gave testimony today.

The matter moved to trial on Friday following the intervention of First Lady Tobeka Madiba-Zuma.
