Children hurt in ‘freak accident’

2011-03-02 13:15

Six primary school children were run over by a vehicle in a freak accident in Umgababa outside Durban this afternoon, KwaZulu-Natal paramedics said.

“One of the teachers asked a child to close a window of her car.

The handbrake went off and the car reversed and went over six kids. The incident happened about 45 minutes ago,” said Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha around 1.30pm.

The accident happened at Amagcino Primary School in the area of Umgababa.

One of the children was on a ventilator and was airlifted to Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital. Others were transported to Prince Mshiyeni Hospital.

Three of the children were in a critical condition, said Botha.
