Chilling with David Kau

2012-11-02 09:48

David Kau has been making us laugh for well over a decade and he shows no signs of slowing down.

‘My whole career has been a highlight,’ he says.

With a busy schedule that includes his Blacks Only comedy franchise, directing a series for Mzansi Magic based on his film Taxi Ride and working on a project with fellow comedians Joey Rasdien and Kagiso Lediga, it’s no wonder David occasionally zones out in front of his PlayStation.

‘It’s like going to play different sports without ever leaving your house – how convenient!’ he says.

Pro Evolution Soccer is his game of choice and when he feels the need for extra competition, he plays with friends. ‘The only person who can beat me at the moment is my friend Kabelo Moeti,’ he says.

He makes sure that his gaming habit never interrupts time with his wife Thalia and their two kids and chilled Sundays are spent surrounded by good food, family and friends.

I like to start my Sundays by going to church.

This is followed by a lunch cooked by my wife. Anything that she cooks, except ribs, is my favourite meal.’

The veteran funnyman says one of his passions is discovering new comedic talent in South Africa.

‘It’s the best feeling ever,’ he says. ‘Even better than being on stage. South Africa has the best comedy audience in the world and we are never short of material.’

» Catch David Kau in his Blacks Only comedy shows at Pretoria State Theatre on 2 and 3 November, the Lyric theatre on 16 and 17 November and at Bafunny Bafunny in Durban on 11 November.

My signature style piece is…

‘I would have to say a hat, just because I like them.’
