Chit Chat: Paul Monare

When will the rain stop?

Hahaha ... probably in winter. It’s going to stay like this for a while.

Isn’t it time we did something about climate change?

Yeah, for sure. We should all work on it. We can start by reducing the number of cars on the road. Let’s share cars (how about lift clubs?) and consume less.

Do you believe that older people can feel the weather in their bones?

I’m really not sure. I guess the longer one has lived, the more your body can sort of tell when a certain winter is colder than the one before, for example.

Is it true that Maru ga se pula (a Tswana idiom

meaning “clouds don’t necessarily mean rain”)?

It is very true. Let me simplify. There are a few processes that need to take place before it can rain. It’s a bit of a long story, actually...

What are your qualifications?

BSc Geography and Environmental Management, BSc Geography Honours and, currently, I’m doing an MSc in Geography.

What drew you to studying geography and the weather?

I’m not really studying the weather; it only formed part of my undergraduate studies because of Geography.

I registered for Geography because I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do and I thought, hey, since I did very well at Geography in matric, why not take it up as a career?

But I was always interested in the arts and entertainment.

I saw myself as that person speaking in front of massive crowds.

What question about the weather do you get asked most often?

People always ask me why weathermen lie so much, or what’s the weather like today. I’ve also been asked why I don’t stop the rain. Eish!

If you were not a weatherman, what would you be?

I would’ve probably studied drama and spent a lot of time at auditions.

Have you ever cancelled a date based on the weather?

No, but it has rained on me while I was with a girl who told me that it might rain. In fact, it flooded.

We were walking to get food. She insisted that we drive there so that we wouldn’t get caught in the rain, but I insisted that I’m the weatherman and that it would only rain much later.

The second we walked out of the fast food establishment, it started raining hard. We were soaked. I doubt she’ll trust me again.

When you are not telling SA about the weather on TV, what do you do?

I’m usually out signing autographs and chilling with my fans (I wish!). No, I do some MC work whenever I get a booking.
I also do admin/data capturing work for a pharmaceutical company.

Then I do research and meetings with my supervisor for my thesis in the afternoons, and sometimes I work on my own at night.

Somewhere in between that, I squeeze in time with my girlfriend and at the gym.

Why do you always mention Wolmaransstad in your weather reports?

I don’t always mention Wolmaransstad. However, it is a small town in North West that happens to be my hometown.

And the weather is very important there.

If you can foretell the weather, surely you can see into the future?

I really think so too. It’s a pity I don’t predict the weather, I just present it.

Maybe the guys at the SA Weather Service can foretell the future. Let me give them a call and see if they know I’m going to be featured in City Press.

What’s your dream job?

I really don’t know. A politician (ANC secretary-general), no, a soccer coach, nah, a Formula 1 racer, nope, a DJ.

No, that’s not it, maybe to have my own TV show looking at the world’s oldest cities (like Jericho, Byblos, Timbuktu and Wolmaransstad), looking at their past lifestyles and their cultures.

I get to travel to those cities and compare them to modern-day ones.

What is your philosophy in life?

Respect your elders, love your neighbour as much as you love yourself, and wash your hands before you eat.

How would you like to be remembered?

As that person who made you see the brighter side of the moon, no matter how difficult your situation was at the time.
