Chit chat: Danny K

2010-05-29 06:50

It’s been three years since Danny K released an album, yet he’s been tabloid fodder over his break-up with his fiancée model Lee-Ann Liebenberg.

But the singer has moved on and is now dating Justine Gundelfinger, another model.

He’s changed pace on the music front too, as a select few discovered when he launched his latest album, Across The Line, at The Venue in Melrose Arch last week.

Just like Madonna
... an artist has to continually reinvent themselves. I have been doing the same genre for the past 10 years. In order to remain relevant, I had to switch things.

The decision for the new album direction
... was not market-related. I changed to the electronica genre because that is the space I’m at today.

I’ve been listening to a lot of rock and dance music lately which ultimately influenced me. It’s a fresh sound which is, thankfully, very popular all over the world, not just in South Africa.

The break-up with Lee-Ann
... made many people focus on me, not as a musician, but as a guy who dates models. I really didn’t realise just how much they had forgotten that I’m a singer. It is high time I’m in the media for the right reasons.
It took a while ... to finish this album because I had recorded many R&B songs which I really ended up not liking. That’s when I felt it’s time for a change.

Not too worried
... about losing my original fan base. I’m just hoping they understand the reasons why I changed from R&B to electronica. It is time to try new things. However, I’m not dumping them entirely. I have a few remixes lined up for a couple of tracks where I feature Teargas and another where I feature JR.

No collaborations here because
... my career is flooded with them. This time around I really did want to cross that line into something new and do it mostly on my own.

Don’t get me wrong – I still love collaborations. But I wanted this body of work to be personal.

When choosing the album title
... I looked for a metaphor that would hopefully get people to see me without the tabloid filter and instead focus on the music and especially this new creative growth. Across The Line is my line in the sand.

I always try and write
... songs that people are going to catch a hold of and I think my pop sensibility was very intact during the songwriting of this album even though musically the direction was very electro-rock.

I have always looked to what’s going on in my own life for lyrical inspiration, but I’ve also always loved being able to do that in a way that speaks to people everywhere.

I worked with
... UK-based South African music producer P ete ‘Boxsta’ Martin who produced my Hurt So Bad single 10 years ago.

It was also good for me to get away from the country for a while just to get my head away from all this rubbish that was happening here.

We’re both very happy with the results of the album.

During the World Cup
... I’ll be performing at various fanparks. Unfortunately I’m not part of any official song, which would’ve been great.

I get embarrassed
. .. whenever I see the E! Entertainment insert about me being on that list of international sexy people.

From what I understand, they got my pictures off my MySpace page. When the people from E! called me about it, I thought it was a joke.

Although the sexy guy thing is not the only way I want to be known internationally, it’s still great exposure.

Maybe they’ll soon get to know me as a great musician too.
