Police and rescue services were still on the scene of a helicopter crash in Pietermaritzburg late this afternoon, trying to clear the debris.

The crash left five people injured – a groom, his parents, his best man and the pilot.

Derrick Banks, spokesman for ER24, confirmed earlier reports that the helicopter had been en route from Durban to Pietermaritzburg for a wedding when it crashed this morning.

The crash happened on a major street, Mayor’s Walk, just outside the Pietermaritzburg Botanical Gardens.

Banks said the pilot had to make an emergency landing – it was not immediately clear why – and had crashed into the road, then into the fence of the botanical gardens.

Banks said the pilot and the groom were in a critical condition and the other occupants were treated for mild to serious injuries and transferred to Medi Clinic Pietermaritzburg.

No bystanders were injured.

“The cause of the crash is still unknown. The wreck would be transported back to Durban for investigation by the Civil Aviation Authority,” said Banks.
