Chubb to refund monthly premium

2010-10-09 14:41

This week Rankwese Maenetja will receive a refund of R464.63 from Chubb Security. The amount was debited from his account as a premium long after he had cancelled the contract.

Alison Bull, spokesperson for Chubb Security, admitted that the firm was unaware that debits were still going through despite the cancellation.

Maenetja, who is from Polokwane in Limpopo, approached Hotline for help to recover the money. He had installed a security device at his house, administered by Chubb, and when he sold the property in April last year, he informed the company to cancel the contract but it obviously failed to do so.

“I informed them verbally during my visit to their offices and also in writing. I sent the notice letter to them on the 16th of April 2009. To my surprise, they continued with the monthly deduction,” he said.

Speaking to Hotline, Bull denied that Maenetja had written a letter to them requesting cancellation.

She said Chubb only became aware of all of this early this year.

“When a client cancels an agreement with Chubb Security, we require the cancellation to be put in writing. In this particular case, this did not happen.

“However, we responded to Maenetja’s query in good faith in February when he came to our offices to cancel his contract, effective 30 April 2009. The new (property) owner had signed up to our services on 6 May 2009,” said Bull, adding that Chubb only owed him a month’s premium of R464.63 and not the R4 545 that Maenetja alleged.

“Maenetja had requested that we pay him an amount of R4 545. However, due to his debit orders not being honoured by his bank, we can confirm that we only owe him an amount of R464.63.”

Maenetja, who has agreed to the money owed to him, said he was happy the matter had finally been resolved.
