City Press’ Charl Blignaut scoops top arts journalism award

City Press senior reporter Charl Blignaut has been named South Africa’s Arts Journalist of the Year for the second consecutive year.

The announcement was made by National Arts Festival CEO Tony Lankester at a media breakfast in Grahamstown today.

The journalism awards, presented by Business and Arts South Africa at the festival, also include six Gold and five Silver merit awards.

The Gold Award for News and Investigative reporting also went to Blignaut for what the judges called “lucid, bold journalism written with passion and conviction but attempting to remain objective and measured in its reporting”.

A Special Silver Merit Award was given to J Brooks Spector for his contribution in art and politics.

In the Review category, two Gold Awards were announced. These went to Matthew Krause and Steve Kretzmann. A Special Merit Award in this section was awarded to Eugene Yiga for his online innovation.

In the photography section, a Gold Award was given to Theana Breugem. And Jesse Kramer received a Special Silver Merit Award.

As arts journalist of the year Blignaut, like other gold winners, will receive a R5 000 cash prize. He also gets the unique chance to travel with a South African production that is invited to one of the World Fringe Alliance Fringe Festivals overseas. The Silver Merit Award Winners each receive R1 000.
