Free State Stars and Polokwane City registered much-needed victories yesterday over Golden Arrows and Orlando Pirates, respectively.

City stunned Pirates 1-0 at Peter Mokaba through Sipho Jembula’s goal in the first half. The defeat was Pirates’ second on the trot after going down to Mamelodi Sundowns by the same margin last weekend to dent their title aspirations.

At Goble Park, Stars ended their winless run in the Absa Premiership when they defeated Arrows 2-1.

Paulus Masehe opened the scoring in the first half and Richard Henyekane added the second after the break before Bongi Ntuli scored a late consolation for the visitors.

Stars broke the deadlock in the 34th minute as Masehe fired a low shot into the back of the net from just inside the penalty area after controlling a pass from Leholo.

The lead was doubled in the 58th minute as Henyekane fired past Arthur Bartman from just inside the box after controlling a headed pass from Mthokozisi Yende.

Arrows did eventually get the ball into the back of the net in the 84th minute as Ntuli beat Tshepo Motsoeneng at his near post with a solid header, connecting with a cross from William Twala.

Henyekane could have restored the two-goal lead two minutes later but his effort was blocked by Bartman, while Twala shot over the crossbar at the other end in the first minute of added time.

Meanwhile, in the CAF Confederations Cup, SuperSport United beat Gaborone United 1-0 to advance 3-0 on aggregate.
