Commonwealth athlete tests negative for Ebola

2014-08-01 10:53

Glasgow - Commonwealth Games officials say an athlete competing at the event has been tested for the Ebola virus, but the tests were negative.

Games officials said in a statement today that “there is no Ebola in the athletes’ village.

“We can confirm an athlete was tested for a number of things, including Ebola, when he fell ill last week.”

The tests were negative and the athlete competed in his event yesterday.

The statement said: “We are dismayed by some of the sensational and misleading headlines to date and request that these are not repeated.”

Local media said the unnamed athlete was from Sierra Leone.

The latest Ebola outbreak is the worst recorded one, and has been centred in Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia. More than 700 people have died in West Africa from Ebola.
