Compulsory driver training on the way: Ndebele

2010-05-28 13:26

A new system making it compulsory to take driving lessons before

obtaining a driver’s license is to be introduced, Transport Minister Sibusiso

Ndebele has said.

Ndebele was replying to a written question from the DA’s Andrew

Louw, who wanted to know whether it was compulsory for learner drivers to take

professional driving lessons from driving schools.

Ndebele said the current process did not prescribe that an

applicant should undergo any professional driving lessons.

“However, the department of transport is in the process of

developing the requirements for a practical driving test, which would be made a

mandatory requirement for acquisition of a driving licence,” he said.

In terms of the proposed legal framework, an application for a

driving licence test would have to be accompanied by a certificate from an

accredited driving school, proving that an applicant for a driving licence had

undergone and satisfied the practical driving licence standards.

The driving schools would be required to keep a register and

logbook signed by the applicant during the period of the training confirming the

attendance of the test.

All driving schools would be required to comply with the prescribed

standards, accredited by the transport department.

“The process of ‘driving schools accreditation’ is underway, which

will be linked with eNaTIS to ensure that only certificates from accredited

driving schools are accepted,” Ndebele said.
