Con men flee with varsity fees

2012-01-26 06:55

Two robbers, dressed in the uniform of Protea Coin guards, fled with R900 000 in cash from the Tshwane University of Technology.

The two men, driving a vehicle that looks exactly like one of the security company’s cash vans, drove into the university’s main Pretoria campus without anyone being suspicious, The Star newspaper reported today.

The money, according to the institution, was student registration fees.

Protea Coin chief executive Petrus van Niekerk was unable to explain how uniforms, badges, insignia and other equipment landed in the robbers’ hands.

“Our opposition have also been affected by this type of thing. It is not only us,” he said.

The con was only discovered when the real guards came to collect money.

“They knew exactly what to do, what to say and where to go. They were so good that they bypassed every security point we had,” said the university’s spokesperson Willa de Ruyter.

“They had all the right equipment, from the hand-held scanner used to scan each money bag’s barcode, to all the necessary identity documents and staff badges.”

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said a case of theft was being investigated, the newspaper reported.
