Concrete slab collapses, kills two

2011-08-24 07:23

Two men were killed, and another critically injured, when a concrete slab on a construction site collapsed on them in Idas Valley, Stellenbosch.

“It is not clear whether the men were sleeping, or just keeping warm, under the structure when the main foundation collapsed,” said Western Cape Emergency Medical Services (EMS) spokesperson Kerry David.

EMS received the call for assistance at 2am and dispatched paramedics and the structural collapse unit, a specialised vehicle used to lift heavy materials.

Two of the men were pronounced dead on the scene, and the third suffered head injuries and a fractured leg.

David said the team worked for almost five hours to free the bodies trapped under the slab.
