Conman dupes Eastern Cape residents

2010-07-06 08:12

A conman has duped several residents of Gonubie, Eastern Cape, into

buying expensive water filters after “testing” their tap water and finding it

unfit to drink.

The Buffalo City municipality has warned residents against the

conman, who posed as a municipality official and entered people’s homes to

“test” their tap water, Dispatch Online has reported.

He then sold them water filters for between R900 and R2 000 to

purify their “dirty” tap water.

The municipality’s acting director of engineering, Graham Cowley,

said the municipality would only do home tap water tests if it was requested by

the resident.

“We distance ourselves from this and urge residents that should

they be approached under the pretence of our authority or institution, they

should inform us so that we can take further action,” said Cowley.
