Taking the plunge took on new meaning when Liquideep threw caution to the wind and put their bodies where their name is. It’s Ziyon and Ryzor as you’ve never seen them before – and it’s proof they’re chilled in every possible way!

It was a long shot: let’s ask the guys from liquideep if they’ll do an underwater shoot as a fun play on their name.

They probably won’t, but let’s try anyway. What’s to lose? You never know.

First stop: their manager, linda maseko. ‘they love swimming. They love water,’ he says.' i'm sure they’ll do it.’

And he’s right! Ziyon and Ryzor – one of the hottest duos on the music scene with record sales in the hundreds of thousands and a raft of awards to their name – are really cool dudes.

‘They’re on,’ Linda says after putting the idea to the pair. ‘They’re naturally curious guys so they’re game for anything.’

Awesome. Next stop: finding a pool and making sure everything is legit as far as safety goes, because heaven forbid something should go wrong.

A diving school in Sandton agrees to come on board. Sandton Scuba will provide the venue, give the musicians a brief lesson in Scuba diving before the shoot and arrange for two divers to be in the water during the shoot in case of an emergency.

The idea is to weigh the pair down in the pool, give them breathing apparatus and then whip it away when the photographer – also underwater – takes his shots.

Thankfully it all goes off without a hitch. The water is cold and a nasty wind makes things rather uncomfortable as the afternoon wears on, but apart from that everything goes smoothly.

‘it was incredible,’ Ziyon says after he’s changed out of his sodden clothes and warmed up a bit. ‘the closest i’ve been to something like that was when i was in thailand and went snorkelling in phuket.

I was terrible – i couldn’t get the hang of it.

But even though this was my first time scuba diving i got it and enjoyed it. The teachers were patient and the whole shoot was quite an experience.’

So he’d do it again? ‘for sure,’ he says. ‘but with aquatic life next time.’

Ryzor is also hooked. ‘i want to do more scuba diving,’ he says. ‘i really enjoyed it.

But the shoot also made me respect models – it was freezing and we had to be underwater looking decent… it wasn’t as easy as it looks.’

Once they’ve recovered we ask Ziyon (real name Jonathan Hamilton, American-born dj/producer) and Ryzor (real name Thabo Shokgolo, vocalist and songwriter from Alexandra in Jozi) to answer some deep and not-so-deep questions.

Making a splash

What’s been your greatest moment as a muso?

That’s a tough one… a few months after [their hit single] ‘fairytale’ was released someone sent me a message telling me he’d played the song at his friend’s funeral. I didn’t actually like ‘fairytale’ – i thought it was cheesy.

But when i heard that something clicked.

I realised it’s not always about me – once the music is out there my feelings have nothing

to do with it. It touches other people and that was humbling.

The most important lesson your mom taught you is..

When people show you who they are, believe them.

I used to be too trusting and gave people the benefit of the doubt even when it was detrimental to me.

My mother’s words are a constant reminder that you can forgive people without having to keep them in your life.

It’s great advice.

Five people (living or dead) you’d love to invite to dinner?

I’d definitely have my mother [gail masondo] and my stepdad [victor masondo] – they’re always there for me, no matter what. My stepdad is a well-known bassist and he really helped me with my career.

Most of the songs people hear from us, he heard first. I’d also have my girlfriend [whose name he won’t share] because I love her company.

The other two places would be filled by Bob Marley so i could ask him about his craft and [American stand-up comedian] Bill Hicks to add some humour to the table. He’s fantastic.

If you could follow in the footsteps of one person it would be?

Malcolm X, the first time he went to Mecca. I’d love to know what he thought and felt when he realised black and white Muslims were interacting as equals.

The motto you live by is...

Something my stepdad taught me: ‘never stop dreaming because dreams are prayers put in pictures for god to see’. It’s something I always keep in mind and when I’m feeling down it reminds me to hold on to my vision.

Do you guys have any dressing room demands at gigs?

No, we’re the cheapest dates! We just need water and maybe some vitamin water. No demands of red m&ms here.

Your current car is…

A black Audi s3. I always told my dad i’d drive a black car and here i am!

Your dream car is…

An Aston Martin Vanquish. I’m more of a look and feel guy; I’m not into the kilowatts and under-the-bonnet detail.

Vanilla or chocolate ice cream?

Definitely chocolate – I’m chocolate all the way!

Boxers or briefs?

Boxers for streetwear and briefs for suits.

I’m not picky about the brand, as long as they fit well. Plus, only one other person gets to see them!

Ryzor (34)

Fluid thinker

Five people (living or dead) you’d love to invite to dinner?

Tupac, because he was a passionate revolutionary who loved people.

Gandhi, because i’d love to understand how he kept so calm and to learn the art of patience from him.

Bruce Lee, because he was ahead of his time in terms of what he did in his movies and he made a huge impact on people. Steve Jobs, because I’m an it geek and would love to pick his brain.

And black coffee. He’s not just talented, he’s a leader too.

Have you had any deep spiritual moments?

I’ve had several – I think it’s because i’m so open to interacting with people.

One time I was helping out at an old-age home with my wife, Zandi, and there was an old man talking to the birds.

Everyone said he was crazy but i spoke to him for an hour and he made me feel things i’ve never felt before, not even in church.

The motto you live by is…

Live each day as if it’s your last. I honour this by trying to be present in all that i do.

If you could aim an arrow at one person, who would it be?

I don’t think there’s any one person!

I have hostility towards movements, not individuals. And for that i’d need more than one arrow…

Your current car is…

A dark blue Audi s3. Ziyon and i were Audi guys before we met so it’s a coincidence that we drive the same car.

Your dream car is…

My current car used to be my dream car. These days it’s a Bentley Sport GT.

Your wish for 2014 is...

To lead a more balanced life. I want to spend more time with my kids, Motheo (8) and Lesedi (3), and my lovely wife. Success is important, but family is everything.
