2012-04-06 11:21

A police station commander was arrested in Swartruggens, near Rustenburg in North West, for possession of R135 000 worth of illegal cigarettes.

At about 11pm yesterday, crime intelligence, organised crime and public order policing units responded to a tip-off which led them to the policeman’s house, said Brigadier Thulani Ngubane.

Twenty-seven boxes and 611 loose packets of cigarettes were recovered.

The policeman (43) and his uncle, in his late 50s, were arrested and would appear in the Swartruggens Magistrates Court on Tuesday, Ngubane said.

In a separate incident early yesterday, a Pakistani tuck shop owner (28), in possession of 136 cartons of illegal cigarettes in the Rustenburg central business district, was arrested.

The recovered cigarettes were valued at R30 200, said Ngubane.

The man would appear in the Rustenburg Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
