A police constable who was arrested for allegedly raping an awaiting trial prisoner was denied bail in the KwaDukuza Magistrates Court.

Constable Langalethu Dumakude (31) was denied bail on Monday, police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said.

Dumakude allegedly raped an awaiting trial prisoner at the Glendale police station on the North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal.

A police officer heard strange sounds coming from the holding cells at about 4pm on Saturday and rushed in to investigate, Naicker said.

“He found the 32-year-old woman who told him she had just been raped by the constable at gun point,” he said.

The woman was in custody for assault.

Dumakude was remanded into police custody until December 28.
