Cop hurt as prisoner snatches gun

A prisoner was re-arrested by the police’s task force after he allegedly snatched a police officer’s firearm and shot and wounded another in a Johannesburg police station today.

“I think the task force did their work by disarming him without any injury,” Gauteng Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said.

The prisoner was disarmed with the help of a negotiator and the task force at the Reiger Park police station around 10am, following a three-hour stand-off with police.

Dlamini said he was taken to an ambulance outside the police station on a stretcher, unharmed, and was treated for shock.

At 6.55am the 28-year-old allegedly grabbed an officer’s firearm through the holding cell’s bars as he was walking towards the offices.

The prisoner fired a shot which ricocheted and wounded another officer in the left arm. He fired a total of six shots.

Claims the man was mentally ill would be “for the medical team to determine”, Dlamini said.

The man was arrested after police were called out to a domestic disturbance in Reiger Park, east of Johannesburg last night at 9.30pm. His sister phoned the police.

Dlamini said there would be an investigation into how the man got hold of the weapon. He would be kept at the Boksburg police station until his appearance in the local magistrates court on an attempted murder charge.
