A police captain was shot and killed and her husband injured during a robbery at a jewellery shop at the Carnival Mall in Brakpan.

Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said a group of about six men arrived at the NWJ jewellery shop today, held staff at gunpoint and took jewellery worth R500 000.

“As they were leaving the shop a police captain who saw what had just happened drew a firearm.

“She was shot in the upper body and died on the scene. Her husband was shot in the neck and was taken to hospital in a stable condition.”

Dlamini said the policewoman was on holiday with her husband. She was based at the KwaZulu-Natal south coast town of Margate.

The men fled in three different vehicles. One of the cars, a Toyota Rav 4, was found abandoned nearby, he said.
All suspects were still at large.
