Cop shot dead by his son

2011-06-15 09:24

A police officer was shot dead by his son in Alexandra yesterday evening, police confirmed.

“A 26-year-old son of Warrant Officer Humbulani Mthego (47) handed himself over at Alexandra police station after he had shot and killed his father,” Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said today.

He handed himself over to the police this morning and would be charged with murder.

Dlamini said it was believed Mthego was killed after he had opened a case against his son for using his vehicle without consent.

He was killed with his own service firearm, Dlamini said.

“His son allegedly came back at midnight with the vehicle and parked it inside the yard. They all went to sleep.”

Mthego was shot just after 4am as he was preparing to go to work, Dlamini said.

“The son went into the bathroom and shot Mthego several times with Mthego’s service pistol.

“He then confronted his mother. His mother managed to grab the firearm, but in the ensuing struggle, she was hit on the head.”

She sustained a slight open wound, Dlamini said.
