Cops may have found grave of missing SA man in Mozambique

A body found in a shallow grave in Massinga, Mozambique, last week is believed to be that of missing South African, Mattheus Jacques Els.

“The vehicle used by Els was also found in the village and we believe that the motive for the murder was robbery,” police spokesman Captain Dennis Adriao said in a statement.

The 25-year-old Els travelled to Mozambique in September on a business trip.

His sister opened a missing person’s case when he did not arrive home as scheduled, Adriao said.

Last month, police arrested the co-worker who had accompanied Els to Mozambique.

A joint investigation between the South African and Mozambican police led to the discovery of the grave.

“Thorough detective work and sound relations with our neighbouring police forces has yet again led to a crime committed against a South African in another country being solved through the co-ordinated efforts of the two police services,” National Police Commissioner General Bheki Cele said.

The Els family were notified and a further identification of the body would be done once it arrived in South Africa.

The co-worker, who was an undocumented migrant, was later charged for murder by the Mozambican police.
