Johannesburg metro police are investigating an incident in which its officers allegedly opened fire on a family car, wounding a woman in Midrand, north of Joburg.

“About 12 hours ago we received a report about metro officers who shot at a family in a car on Sunday night,” Senior Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said today.

The wife of the driver of the car is in a serious condition in hospital.

The circumstances around the incident are still being investigated.

Minaar said his department managed to link one of their cars and one officer to the shooting which occurred at the corner of Alexandra road and Smuts Avenue in Midrand at around 7pm.

“The matter is being investigated by JMPD and SAPS as police brutality will not be tolerated.”
