Cops search for Checkers gang

2010-11-03 09:04

Police were this morning still searching for a gang of robbers who made off with an undisclosed amount of money after an armed robbery at a Checkers store in Edenvale, Gauteng police said.

“A manhunt has been launched for the robbers,” said Captain Jethro Mtshali.

He said more than 15 robbers held up staff and customers inside the store near the Greenstone shopping mall around 6pm yesterday.

They emptied tills before hijacking two vehicles, a white Yaris and a black VW Polo, outside the store.

A customer was hit over the head with a firearm when the robbers made a failed attempt to take his car as well.

A security guard walking towards the store was shot and wounded. The guard was shot in the upper body and was taken to hospital.

A case of armed robbery and hijacking had been opened, said Mtshali.

Anyone with information about the incident could contact police on 10111.?
