Cops shoot dead two would-be robbers

Two of the six men who allegedly tried to rob a house near Mondeor this morning were shot dead by the police.

Six men broke into a home on Thaba Nchu Street in Glenvista around 6am, where they tied up a couple and their three children at gun point, said captain Katlego Mogale in a statement.

Mogale said police were alerted to the robbery in progress and raced to the scene.

“When the police arrived, the alleged robbers had already fled without injuring anyone or stealing anything from the house.”

The police searched the area after they were given the descriptions of the suspects.

They came across two men who were walking in the street behind the home that was attacked, Mogale said.

She said the police stopped the men and tried to question them, but one of them drew a firearm and pointed it at the officers.

“A scuffle ensued as an officer and one man wrestled over the firearm.”

Both men were shot and killed instantly by the officers, said Mogale.

One of the policemen sustained a slight injury to his right wrist during the scuffle.

Mogale said further investigations revealed that the men had tried to break into two other houses in the same vicinity a few hours earlier.

A case of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition has been opened for investigation.

Four suspects were still at large.
